Since you are running RD Gateway, they are likely just moving on to an easier target once they realize you do not have an exposed RD server. It is very possible the packets you are seeing are simply harmless 'probes' from people scanning for open RDP ports. Might I add, I just inherited this environment so I am racing to get all of these configs in my head before something catastrophic happens.
RDS is not exposed to the internet, that is really what baffles me about these seeming "direct" connections.
